Durban City are set to mark a historic milestone this Sunday when they make their Premier Soccer League (PSL) debut in the Betway Premiership, facing TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM.
The KwaZulu-Natal side earned promotion to the top tier after an impressive 2024/25 campaign in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Now under the guidance of seasoned coach Gavin Hunt, the newly-promoted outfit is eager to show they’re not just here to make up the numbers.
City enter their maiden top-flight campaign on a high, having recorded pre-season victories over Milford FC and AmaZulu. That winning momentum, combined with a squad full of belief, sets the stage for what could be a statement performance.
Speaking ahead of the match, Hunt acknowledged the unique challenge that lies ahead—especially in a province where football loyalty is hard-earned.
“Anytime you go to a new team, it gives you a new lease of life. You fall in love with the game again,” said Hunt.
“Sometimes you fall out of love with the game when things happen like it happened. But it is what it is. The league is very competitive. Anybody can beat anybody. But there are obviously one or two teams that are better. That’s going to be the challenge.”
City’s opening fixture, however, is far from an easy assignment. TS Galaxy — also known as the Rockets — may be reeling from their 3-2 MTN 8 quarterfinal defeat to Sekhukhune United last weekend, but they remain one of the most tactically disciplined teams in the division under new head coach Adnan Beganović.
Galaxy have made waves in the transfer market with nine new signings, most notably the addition of veteran striker Sedwyn George. Known for his clinical finishing and intelligent movement in the final third, George is expected to provide leadership and attacking threat.
On the other side, Durban City will look to experienced midfielder Haashim Domingo to pull the strings. A marquee signing from Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City, Domingo adds flair, creativity and composure in midfield. His ability to operate between the lines and unlock tight defences will be crucial as City aim to break down Galaxy’s organised backline.
The clash promises an intriguing battle of experience versus enthusiasm — with Galaxy’s PSL pedigree set against Durban City’s fresh momentum and hunger to prove themselves.
For Hunt and his charges, adjusting swiftly to the pace and intensity of the top tier will be key. A victory on debut would not only boost confidence but also serve as a strong statement of intent.
TS Galaxy, meanwhile, will be determined to bounce back from cup disappointment and play spoilers to the new boys on the block.
